CPAP Titration Performed in the Comfort of St. Francis Sleep Center Near Clearwater and New Port Richey, FL

CPAP titration is a type of in-lab sleep study performed by Dr. Frank Averill at St. Francis Sleep, Allergy & Lung Institute, which is convenient to patients from Clearwater, New Port Richey, and other neighboring FL communities. The results of a CPAP titration study can be used to calibrate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which is commonly recommended to treat and manage various sleep-related breathing disorders, such as sleep apnea. If you’ve been diagnosed with a sleep disorder, or you’re experiencing sleep-related issues, Dr. Averill can help.

In some cases, such as when a diagnosis is clear or the sleep apnea is severe, Dr. Averill might perform a CPAP titration as part of a split-night sleep study conducted at St. Francis’ comfortable, state-of-the-art sleep center near Clearwater and New Port Richey, Florida. Here is what the test entails:

  • During the first half of the night, a patient’s sleep is quietly monitored as important data is collected and recorded.
  • At the mid-point, Dr. Averill will review the initial results and initiate a CPAP titration study to determine the proper parameters for CPAP treatment. CPAP therapy involves the use of mild air pressure to keep a patient’s airways open while he or she sleeps.
  • Prior to beginning the CPAP titration, a technician will assist the patient in selecting and putting on a comfortable nasal mask through which air will gently flow as he or she sleeps.
  • Throughout the rest of the night, the technician will continually monitor and adjust the air pressure to normalize the patient’s breathing.

The goal of CPAP titration is to identify the appropriate amount of air pressure to prevent a patient’s upper airway from becoming blocked, and thus eliminate the pauses in breathing that occur as a result of sleep apnea. This is important because breathing pauses can inhibit the supply of oxygen to a patient’s vital organs, which can lead to chronic heart or lung disease, and a general feeling of fatigue during the day.
