An Overnight Sleep Study can be Performed in the Comfort of St. Francis Sleep Center Located Near Clearwater, New Port Richey, and Palm Harbor, FL

An overnight sleep study, or polysomnogram, is a valuable tool that can provide a physician with a comprehensive evaluation of your sleep. If you’re experiencing sleeping difficulties that are affecting the quality of your rest and life, Dr. Frank Averill of St. Francis Sleep, Allergy & Lung Institute can help. A board-certified sleep medicine physician with extensive experience, Dr. Averill has been treating patients from Clearwater, New Port Richey, Palm Harbor, Trinity, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, and other Florida communities for more than 25 years. At St. Francis, an overnight sleep study is neither stressful nor intimidating. Instead, each test is performed amid the peaceful and relaxing surroundings of a state-of-the-art sleeping room that features many of the amenities of home.

Dr. Averill might recommend an overnight sleep study to:

  • Test for sleep apnea and other sleep-related breathing disorders.
  • Evaluate behaviors caused by parasomnias, such as walking, talking, eating, groaning, teeth grinding, bed wetting, and night terrors.
  • Diagnose sleep-related neurological disorders, such as narcolepsy and restless leg syndrome.
  • Calibrate the levels of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in patients who receive CPAP therapy for sleep-related breathing disorders.
  • Determine why a prescribed treatment for a sleep disorder is not working.

During an overnight sleep study, your brain waves, heartbeats, and breathing patterns are unobtrusively recorded as you rest. In addition, your eye movements, limb movements, and the level of oxygen in your blood are charted. This data can help a doctor evaluate your symptoms, diagnose the underlying causes, and recommend customized solutions to help manage your sleep issues.

For some patients suspected of having obstructive sleep apnea, Dr. Averill might recommend a home sleep test instead of an in-lab study. A home sleep test utilizes different equipment that can be set up by the patient at his or her home.

An overnight sleep study or home sleep test can help ensure a proper diagnosis for your sleep disorder. Contact St. Francis today if you think you might need a sleep test, or if you’d like to discuss your sleep issues with Dr. Averill. Our clinic is convenient to residents of Clearwater, New Port Richey, Palm Harbor, Oldsmar, Safety Harbor, St. Petersburg, Largo, and the surrounding FL area.
