Fourth of July Healthy Diet Survival Tips

The fun and festivities have already begun for Fourth of July celebrations, and it’s easy to fall off track with your new healthy lifestyle.  If you’re heading out to a potluck or community gathering, at least you have the option to bring your own healthy foods with you. You can stay on your diet by following some tried and true tips and by knowing some key items you’ll want to keep off limits.

  1. Drink plenty of water. Celebrations often call for high calorie drinks, especially if you are partying outdoors. The summer heat makes everyone thirsty, so it’s just easy to grab an icy soda to go. Instead, opt for a bottle of cold water.
  2. Bring your own dessert. It seems that the tasty desserts at a 4th of July party are often what get everyone in trouble. This is the perfect time to bring your own diet-friendly dessert. For that matter, if you fear that you will make unwise food choices; bring your own main dish as well.
  3. Diet saboteur #1: Potato salad.  A low carb dieter’s nightmare, you’re looking at extra calories from both carbs and fat. The most popular potato salads at the Fourth of July picnic are usually the ones loaded with full fat mayonnaise and extras such as bacon and cheese.
  4. Diet saboteur #2: Hot Dogs. Three fourths of Americans say hot dogs are more strongly associated with the 4th of July than with any other holiday. Limit your hot dog intake to one without the bun, or forego it all together. A vegan hot dog will be a healthier option, preventing you from ingesting an average 300 calories and 18 grams of fat. I personally like the vegan smart dogs and National Hebrew fat free hot dogs.  This healthier version, topped with onions, low sugar relish and mustard will satisfy your desire for this traditional food without the added calories and fat.
  5. Diet saboteur #3: Barbeque ribs. Loaded with over 1500 calories and 65 grams of fat per serving, the ribs aren’t the best choice for your 4th of July picnic. They may be high in protein, but are filled with artery clogging fat. Switch to a healthier alternative such as marinated grilled chicken or grilled lean (7%) ground beef.
  6. Be Aware. One of the biggest problems at parties is not all the food that’s there. Rather, it’s the fact that you don’t stay conscious and aware of what you’re eating or how much you are consuming. This is a great time to practice mindful eating. Pay attention to your level of hunger and don’t grab a plate of food just because everyone else is standing around munching and chatting.
  7. The best strategy for Fourth of July celebrations? Pack a picnic and manage your day by being well-prepared. Eat light and frequently throughout the day, picking up fresh fruit, veggies, salads with low-fat dressing, grilled vegetable wraps, and marinated chicken on the grill. If you’re heading out to a barbeque or any other grilling event, take along your own specialty dishes to share. There are plenty of delicious low fat and low carb recipes available.
  8. Outdoor activities. Get involved and plan some outdoor activities. Stay active and aware of what you’re doing so that you can enjoy the best Fourth of July this year without packing on the pounds.
